Glossary/Link Cloaking

Link Cloaking

The practice of hiding a long, complex affiliate URL behind a shorter, cleaner branded URL to improve click-through rates, build trust, and protect affiliate commissions.

Extended Definition

Affiliate URLs are typically long and ugly, filled with tracking parameters, affiliate IDs, and encoded strings. For example:

https://offer.com/signup?aff_id=12345&source=facebook&sub1=landing_v2&click_id=abc123def456

Link cloaking replaces this with a clean, branded URL like:

https://go.yourbrand.com/best-offer

Why Affiliates Cloak Links

  • Trust — Visitors are more likely to click a branded link than a suspicious-looking affiliate URL
  • Higher CTR — Clean links get 30-40% more clicks than raw affiliate URLs
  • Commission protection — Hides your affiliate ID so competitors can't steal your commissions by replacing it with theirs
  • Easy management — If the affiliate offer URL changes, you update the redirect destination without changing the link you've shared everywhere
  • Platform compliance — Some social media platforms flag or block known affiliate domains. A custom domain avoids this

How GeoRedir Handles Link Cloaking

Every GeoRedir smart link is automatically cloaked. You share your branded domain URL (e.g., go.yourbrand.com/offer), and GeoRedir redirects to the affiliate destination URL with all tracking parameters appended. The visitor never sees the raw affiliate URL in the link they click.

Set up your branded domain in the Custom Domains Guide.
