Glossary/Geo-Targeting

Geo-Targeting

The practice of delivering different content, offers, or redirects to users based on their geographic location.

Extended Definition

Geo-targeting (also called geographic targeting or location-based targeting) is a technique that identifies a visitor's physical location and uses that information to deliver relevant, localized content. In affiliate marketing, geo-targeting is primarily used to redirect visitors to country-specific offers, operators, or storefronts.

Location is typically determined by IP address, which maps to a country and region with high accuracy. Modern edge networks like Cloudflare provide location data at the network level without needing IP lookup databases, enabling near-instant detection.

Types of Geo-Targeting

  • Country-level — Route by country (e.g., US, GB, DE). Most common in affiliate marketing.
  • Region-level — Route by state or province within a country. Used for regulatory compliance.
  • City-level — Route by city. Less common but used for local offers.
  • Continent-level — Group countries by continent for broad targeting.

How GeoRedir Handles Geo-Targeting

GeoRedir uses Cloudflare Workers to detect visitor location at the edge — before the redirect even starts. This enables sub-200ms geo-targeted redirects from 300+ global locations. You create geo rules on your smart links that specify which countries should redirect to which destination URLs.
