IP geolocation is the process of determining the physical location of a device connected to the internet using its IP address. Every device that connects to the internet is assigned an IP address (like 203.0.113.42), and that address can be mapped to a geographic location — typically accurate to the country and city level.
IP geolocation databases are built by correlating IP address ranges with known locations using data from:
When you look up an IP address, the geolocation database returns several data points:
| Data Point | Description | Typical Accuracy |
|---|---|---|
| Country | The country where the IP is registered | 99%+ accurate |
| Region / State | The state, province, or administrative region | 85-95% accurate |
| City | The nearest city to the IP's location | 70-85% accurate |
| Postal / ZIP Code | The postal code area | 60-75% accurate |
| Latitude / Longitude | Approximate coordinates | Within 25-50km |
| ISP | The Internet Service Provider (e.g., Comcast, Vodafone, BT) | 99%+ accurate |
| Organization | The organization that owns the IP block | 95%+ accurate |
| ASN | Autonomous System Number — the network identifier | 99%+ accurate |
| Timezone | The timezone associated with the IP's location | 95%+ accurate |
| Connection Type | Residential, mobile, data center, VPN/proxy | 90%+ accurate |
Accuracy Note: Country-level detection is extremely reliable (99%+). City-level accuracy varies — it's highest in densely populated areas and lower in rural regions. IP geolocation identifies the ISP's point of presence, not the user's exact street address.
IP geolocation accuracy depends on the level of detail:
| Level | Accuracy | Reliable For |
|---|---|---|
| Country | 99.5%+ | Geo-targeting, compliance routing, content localization |
| Region / State | 85-95% | Regional offers, state-level regulations (US gambling) |
| City | 70-85% | Local offers, approximate location display |
| Exact location | Not possible | IP geolocation cannot pinpoint a street address |
The IP resolves to the VPN server's location, not the user's actual location.
Carrier-grade NAT can assign IPs from a different city than the user.
Starlink and similar services may show the ground station location.
Large companies route all traffic through a central gateway, so employees in different cities share one IP location.
When ISPs reassign IP blocks to different regions, databases may take weeks to update.
Detect a visitor's country and redirect them to the most relevant offer, storefront, or landing page. GeoRedir uses IP geolocation at the edge to route traffic in under 200ms.
Identify suspicious traffic patterns — clicks from data center IPs (likely bots), mismatches between claimed location and IP location, or traffic from countries you don't target.
Show visitors content in their language, display prices in their currency, or present region-specific promotions based on their detected location.
Block or redirect visitors from restricted jurisdictions. Critical for iGaming affiliates who must only show licensed operators to visitors in regulated markets.
Understand where your traffic comes from geographically. Identify high-value markets and underserved regions to inform your marketing strategy.
Verify that your ad platforms are targeting the correct geographic regions. If you're running US-only ads but see clicks from India, something is wrong.
If you're an affiliate marketer, IP geolocation is the foundation of geo-targeted campaigns. Here's how it fits into your workflow:
Use this tool to verify what country and city your IP resolves to. This is what GeoRedir (and any geo-targeting platform) sees when you click a link.
After setting up a smart link with geo-targeting rules, use a VPN to change your IP to different countries and test that the correct redirect fires. Look up the VPN's IP here to confirm the detected country matches.
If your analytics show clicks from unexpected countries, look up those IPs here. Data center IPs (ISP shows “Amazon AWS”, “Google Cloud”, “DigitalOcean”) are almost certainly bots, not real visitors.
Look up IPs from your server logs to understand where traffic originates and whether it's legitimate residential traffic or data center / proxy traffic.
This tool supports both IPv4 and IPv6 addresses:
The traditional format with four numbers separated by dots. Still the most common format.
203.0.113.42The newer format with eight groups of hexadecimal digits. Increasingly common as IPv4 addresses run out.
2001:0db8:85a3::8a2e:0370:7334Both formats are geolocated using the same databases. IPv6 adoption is growing — as of 2026, approximately 45% of internet traffic uses IPv6.
This free lookup tool uses the same IP geolocation technology that powers GeoRedir's smart link redirects. When a visitor clicks one of your GeoRedir smart links:
Cloudflare's edge network detects the visitor's IP address and country at the network level — before the request even reaches application code
GeoRedir evaluates your redirect rules against the detected country in under 200ms
The visitor is redirected to the matching destination URL
Because detection happens at the edge (not via a separate IP lookup API call), GeoRedir's geo-targeting is faster and more reliable than platforms that query external geolocation databases on every click.
