What Is IP Geolocation?

IP geolocation is the process of determining the physical location of a device connected to the internet using its IP address. Every device that connects to the internet is assigned an IP address (like 203.0.113.42), and that address can be mapped to a geographic location — typically accurate to the country and city level.

IP geolocation databases are built by correlating IP address ranges with known locations using data from:

  • Regional Internet Registries (RIRs)ARIN, RIPE, APNIC, LACNIC, and AFRINIC allocate IP blocks to ISPs and organizations in specific regions
  • ISP dataInternet service providers assign IP ranges to specific geographic service areas
  • Wi-Fi positioningMapping Wi-Fi access points to physical locations
  • User-reported dataAggregated, anonymized location data from consenting users
  • BGP routing dataBorder Gateway Protocol data reveals the network path of IP addresses

What Data Does an IP Lookup Return?

When you look up an IP address, the geolocation database returns several data points:

Data PointDescriptionTypical Accuracy
CountryThe country where the IP is registered99%+ accurate
Region / StateThe state, province, or administrative region85-95% accurate
CityThe nearest city to the IP's location70-85% accurate
Postal / ZIP CodeThe postal code area60-75% accurate
Latitude / LongitudeApproximate coordinatesWithin 25-50km
ISPThe Internet Service Provider (e.g., Comcast, Vodafone, BT)99%+ accurate
OrganizationThe organization that owns the IP block95%+ accurate
ASNAutonomous System Number — the network identifier99%+ accurate
TimezoneThe timezone associated with the IP's location95%+ accurate
Connection TypeResidential, mobile, data center, VPN/proxy90%+ accurate

Accuracy Note: Country-level detection is extremely reliable (99%+). City-level accuracy varies — it's highest in densely populated areas and lower in rural regions. IP geolocation identifies the ISP's point of presence, not the user's exact street address.

How Accurate Is IP Geolocation?

IP geolocation accuracy depends on the level of detail:

LevelAccuracyReliable For
Country99.5%+Geo-targeting, compliance routing, content localization
Region / State85-95%Regional offers, state-level regulations (US gambling)
City70-85%Local offers, approximate location display
Exact locationNot possibleIP geolocation cannot pinpoint a street address

Factors That Reduce Accuracy

VPNs and Proxies

The IP resolves to the VPN server's location, not the user's actual location.

Mobile Networks

Carrier-grade NAT can assign IPs from a different city than the user.

Satellite Internet

Starlink and similar services may show the ground station location.

Corporate Networks

Large companies route all traffic through a central gateway, so employees in different cities share one IP location.

Recently Reassigned IPs

When ISPs reassign IP blocks to different regions, databases may take weeks to update.

Common Use Cases for IP Geolocation

Affiliate Marketing & Geo-Targeting

Detect a visitor's country and redirect them to the most relevant offer, storefront, or landing page. GeoRedir uses IP geolocation at the edge to route traffic in under 200ms.

Fraud Detection & Prevention

Identify suspicious traffic patterns — clicks from data center IPs (likely bots), mismatches between claimed location and IP location, or traffic from countries you don't target.

Content Localization

Show visitors content in their language, display prices in their currency, or present region-specific promotions based on their detected location.

Regulatory Compliance

Block or redirect visitors from restricted jurisdictions. Critical for iGaming affiliates who must only show licensed operators to visitors in regulated markets.

Analytics & Audience Insights

Understand where your traffic comes from geographically. Identify high-value markets and underserved regions to inform your marketing strategy.

Ad Targeting Verification

Verify that your ad platforms are targeting the correct geographic regions. If you're running US-only ads but see clicks from India, something is wrong.

IP Geolocation for Affiliate Marketers

If you're an affiliate marketer, IP geolocation is the foundation of geo-targeted campaigns. Here's how it fits into your workflow:

1. Test Your Own IP

Use this tool to verify what country and city your IP resolves to. This is what GeoRedir (and any geo-targeting platform) sees when you click a link.

2. Verify Geo Rules

After setting up a smart link with geo-targeting rules, use a VPN to change your IP to different countries and test that the correct redirect fires. Look up the VPN's IP here to confirm the detected country matches.

3. Investigate Suspicious Traffic

If your analytics show clicks from unexpected countries, look up those IPs here. Data center IPs (ISP shows “Amazon AWS”, “Google Cloud”, “DigitalOcean”) are almost certainly bots, not real visitors.

4. Check Competitor Traffic Sources

Look up IPs from your server logs to understand where traffic originates and whether it's legitimate residential traffic or data center / proxy traffic.

IPv4 vs IPv6

This tool supports both IPv4 and IPv6 addresses:

IPv4

The traditional format with four numbers separated by dots. Still the most common format.

203.0.113.42

IPv6

The newer format with eight groups of hexadecimal digits. Increasingly common as IPv4 addresses run out.

2001:0db8:85a3::8a2e:0370:7334

Both formats are geolocated using the same databases. IPv6 adoption is growing — as of 2026, approximately 45% of internet traffic uses IPv6.

How GeoRedir Uses IP Geolocation

This free lookup tool uses the same IP geolocation technology that powers GeoRedir's smart link redirects. When a visitor clicks one of your GeoRedir smart links:

1

Cloudflare's edge network detects the visitor's IP address and country at the network level — before the request even reaches application code

2

GeoRedir evaluates your redirect rules against the detected country in under 200ms

3

The visitor is redirected to the matching destination URL

Because detection happens at the edge (not via a separate IP lookup API call), GeoRedir's geo-targeting is faster and more reliable than platforms that query external geolocation databases on every click.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can IP geolocation find someone's exact address?
No. IP geolocation identifies the approximate area (city or region) associated with an IP address, not a street address. It's accurate enough for country and city-level targeting but cannot pinpoint a specific building or home.
Why does my IP show a different city than where I am?
Your ISP's point of presence may be in a nearby city. For example, if you live in a suburb, your IP may resolve to the nearest major city where your ISP has infrastructure. This is normal and doesn't affect country-level geo-targeting.
Does a VPN affect IP geolocation?
Yes. When you use a VPN, your traffic exits through the VPN server's IP address. The geolocation lookup will show the VPN server's location, not your actual location. This is why VPN users may see different content when visiting geo-targeted websites.
How often are IP geolocation databases updated?
Major geolocation providers update their databases weekly or bi-weekly. However, there can be a lag of days to weeks when ISPs reassign IP blocks to different regions. Country-level data is updated fastest; city-level data may take longer.
Is IP geolocation legal?
Yes. IP geolocation uses publicly available data from Regional Internet Registries and network routing information. It does not access personal data or require user consent. However, how you use the location data may be subject to privacy regulations like GDPR — for example, you should inform users if you're redirecting them based on their location.
